Multi Modal Transit Centers

Introduction

Promoting buses as a preferable mode of transport to personal vehicles, requires not only an improvement in the quality of service of buses but also in its supporting infrastructure. In this context, the Multi Modal Transit Centers are being upgraded such that they not only provide better passenger amenities but also connect passengers with other modes of transport, thus enabling them to travel faster.

Located on the periphery of Delhi, the MMTCs form major hubs in the public transport system for the metropolis of National Capital Region and the neighbouring states. MMTCs have been conceived to provide seam less connectivity to the public across various modes and geographic regions between the inter-state buses, railway, local buses, Metro, Mono Rail and Light Rail systems.

DIMTS has been appointed as the Project Management Consultant and Detailed Design Consultant for the MMTCs.

Design

The new MMTC is a state of the art, modern and integrated 'green building'. While being modern in its structure and appearance, the design also keeps in mind the main functionality of the building and that is to cater to large crowds thus requiring easy maintenance. The design also had the challenge of integrating an elevated metro track, a via duct which bisects the site into two parts and also the railway station, while retaining the independent characteristics of all these components.

There are separate entrances and exits for buses, auto and taxis to avoid clash between different modes of transport. A well planned network of foot over bridges allows easy movement of pedestrians between the terminal, metro station and the railway station.

An important feature of this building is its environment friendly design. It efficiently uses energy, water and other resources to protect the health of the public, reduce wastage, increase productivity and of course protect the environment.

The MMTC will also have provision for a shopping arcade, restaurants as well as food courts.
